Extraction Site Preservation

When a tooth must be removed, it is important to consider what will be done with the empty space after that tooth is removed. With the exception of wisdom teeth, other teeth need to be replaced. Failing to do so will have less than desirable results. The jaw bone will degenerate and change shape during healing and can cause your teeth to shift. This can create problems in your bite, create a periodontal issue, and affect your ability to speak and chew. As well, the tooth above or below the space may "over-erupt", causing more of the same issues.

The space may be filled in a number of ways. Your dentist can examine your situation and recommend an implant, fixed bridge, or removable partial denture.

It is important to have a plan in place. We are always happy to discuss your options!
